Our Mission

Ability Bikes improves the mobility of people in Ghana by selling and repairing bicycles for able-bodied people and mobility aids for persons with disability. Ability Bikes empowers persons with disability with job training and access to sustainable economic opportunities.

About Ability Bikes

Ability Bikes Cooperative is a social enterprise bike shop based in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Ability Bikes is cooperatively owned and operated by its workers, who are all persons with physical disability. Ability Bikes imports used bicycles and mobility aids from partners in North America and the United Kingdom, refurbishes these bikes and mobility aids in their professional mechanics shop and sells them at very affordable prices to people who need them.

Members of Ability Bikes Cooperative are all persons with disability, with physical and mobility challenges. The members are seven in total, and work full-time managing the bike workshop, sales stores and business administration. On a daily basis, Ability Bikes improves the mobility of their customers with high quality bicycles and mobility aids.

History of Ability Bikes

Bikes Not Bombs aided in the establishment of Ability Bikes Cooperative in 2008. They sent a representative to support the early development of Ability Bikes and to provide the initial training of the workers. In 2009, the members of Ability Bikes began running the business independently and with full responsibility and ownership. Bikes Not Bombs continues to provide technical assistance to support the ongoing development of Ability Bikes.

Ability Bikes now partners with Bikes Not Bombs, Re-Cycle, Working Bikes and Bikes for the World to receive shipments of donated used bikes and mobility aids, as well as other forms of support.

Our Principles

  1. There should be Freedom of Mobility, because mobility is a right for all, thus bicycles and mobility aids give people this freedom in transportation  A workplace should be free and fair for all persons, with or without disability.
  2. Ability Bikes wants to assure that persons with physical and mobility disability have access to walking and mobility aids for an inclusive society.
  3. We aim to provide high quality and durable bicycles and mobility aids to clients.
  4. We prioritize transparency and accountability throughout the business.
  5. Ability Bikes is a strong advocate against any level of discrimination and believes that everyone should be treated equally.
  6. We believe in continuous education and skills development.
  7. We must work toward the creation of jobs and economic opportunity for all.
  8. We aim to build more international partnerships, as well as nation-wide and local collaborations.

Mobility Aids for Persons with Disabilities

Ability Bikes receives donations of wheelchairs, crutches, able-crutches and canes.  We refurbish these and donate or distribute them at very low cost to persons with disability in the Koforidua area.

Many persons with disability do not have adequate tools for mobility. Many suffer due to the financial barriers preventing them and their families from acquiring the necessary mobility aids they need to live productive lives. Mobility is a Human Right.

Ability Bikes international partners include wheelchairs and other mobility aids in their shipments of donated used bikes, but often the quality is low.  Ability Bikes is looking to expand our work with providing quality wheelchairs for rough terrain and other mobility aids to persons with disability who need them in Ghana.
